Application
Shuttle system applications
A feature of automated warehouses, shuttle systems play a decisive part in ensuring efficient handling of stored items in many companies’ logistics set-ups.
The shuttles have four driven wheels, which allows for fast and precise manoeuvring. But rapid braking and accelerating can pose problems, so a robust connection between the wheel and the drive shaft is essential. Using shuttles can help to improve order picking, which translates into increased goods turnover.
The tires need to minimise vibrations caused by concentricity problems, uneven tracks and deposits on the rails. Shuttle flaps are just as crucial – used to move goods around, they call for innovative solutions that meet the highest standards both in terms of load-bearing capacity and durability.
Overhead conveyor carriages, which come in a range of different weight categories, require smooth-running carriages with burr-free surfaces. Low-wear, low-noise operation is essential in environments where dust build-up is a problem.
Shuttle system materials
An innovative range of materials that are ideally suited to the testing conditions found in highly automated warehouses – an advantage that sets faigle’s shuttle system components apart from the competition. Featuring a two-component design with a polyamide hub and PAS-PU TCS tire, our shuttle wheels are a byword for outstanding load-bearing capacity, minimal rolling resistance and excellent concentricity. The injection-moulded shuttle flaps are made from carbon-fibre-reinforced PAS-PAA LCF – 80% lighter than steel flaps, they also stand out for their unrivalled resilience and durability.
faigle’s overhead conveyors feature particularly smooth-running ball bearings, as well as wheels made from high-performance plastics that deliver excellent wear resistance and low-noise operations. The wheel body is also made from high-performance plastics – in some cases fibre-reinforced – that make for optimum performance. Antistatic and electroconductive materials for the safe discharge of electrostatic build-up are available on request.
Shuttle systems – product range
Shuttle flaps
Made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic, faigle’s injection-moulded shuttle flaps meet the highest standards when it comes to load-bearing capacity and fatigue resistance. Thanks to an FEM-optimised ribbed construction in combination with PAS-PAA LCF, the flaps can handle over five million load cycles. The design is 80% lighter than conventional solutions, while a smaller number of components makes assembly more efficient.
Shuttle wheels
faigle shuttle wheels ensure smooth, low-vibration running, while their outstanding concentricity and the damping properties of the tire and hub stop stored items slipping. Besides helping to keep flattening to a minimum after longer stoppages, optimised PAS-PU TCS’s excellent grip on the track ensures reliable drive transmission. The injection-moulded polyamide hub allows for functional integration of connecting and drive elements, which ensure reliable operation with heavy loads and at high speeds.

FAQ
Which materials are shuttle system components made from?
faigle’s shuttle system components feature high-quality materials that are tailor-made for a wide range of applications. The two-component shuttle wheel design includes a stiff polyamide hub and PAS-PU TCS tire.
Made from carbon-fibre-reinforced PAS-PAA LCF, our injection-moulded plastic shuttle flaps have an FEM-optimised ribbed design. For our overhead conveyor carriages we use specially designed, smooth-running ball bearings with a contactless cover plate, while the wheel’s tire and main body are made from special high-performance plastics. These durable materials have high load-bearing capacities, and ensure low-wear, low-noise operation. Materials with antistatic properties are available on request.
What demands do shuttle system components have to withstand?
Shuttle systems normally run on two or four driven wheels. This results in high speeds and strong dynamic forces. Rapid shuttle braking and acceleration put significant stress on the tires, so the wheels need to be firmly connected with the shuttle’s drive shaft to ensure effective drive-torque transfer. In high bays, a number of factors can cause vibrations. This means that shuttle wheels have to be able to run smoothly at high speeds without vibrating; they also need to have excellent damping properties.
Shuttle flaps are heavy-duty components used in shuttle systems. They need to meet very high standards when it comes to load-bearing capacity and durability. faigle shuttle flaps are made from a special material that meets both of these requirements.
